Scantron Test Scoring Procedure


In this topic, you will learn how to score tests using the Scantron machine and Remark Classic OMR 4 Software.


  1. To begin scanning, place the answer sheets in the Scantron machine

    Sheets must all face in the same direction.

  2. If this is the first time you are scanning, click the Read Wizard  icon.  Otherwise, click the Easy Scan icon.


    In this example, click the Read Wizard.

  4. The answer sheets will scan.  Once all the sheets have been read, respond No to the Continue Scanning prompt.


    If additional sheets need to be scanned, respond:  Yes, until all the sheets have been scanned.

  5. To Sort Results (optional):


    Right-click on the column heading "Student Name"    This will sort the data by the student's last name.

  9. Click the Grade Wizard button.

  11. Click the drop down arrow to the right of the Answer Key Source field.

  14. Place the Answer Key in the Scantron machine and click Read.

    Over the next few screens, you will set up the characteristics of test scoring.     

    The current screen is the Answer Key Screen.

  16. If you need to skip a question(s), uncheck the box for that question(s) in the Grade Objective column.


    Click the Next button.

    The questions are on the left; with the question properties on the right.  Select the question(s) whose properties you would like to change.

  18. In this example, we'll change the properties for Question 1.

  19. Click the up / down arrow to change the points for Question #1.

  21. To change the properties for a block of questions:


    Select the first question.  In this example, we'll select Question #3.

  22. Hold the Shift Key and select the last question.   

    In this example, select Question #5.

  24. Let's make Questions 3, 4, and 5 worth 3 points.

  28. Note:    The first time you use the Remark software on a particular computer, you will need to create the WCU Grade scale.  Do so by selecting General Scale (with Plus/Minus).  On Line 1,  change A+ to an A (WCU does not have an A+ on the grade scale). 


    Click Save and enter the name WCU Grade Scale.

  32. Custom Report Header (optional):


    Follow these steps to add a header to your reports.


    If you do not wish to add a header, click the Next button.

  33. Check this box to add a custom header.


    If a custom header is specified for use in the answer key, it will override any header settings saved for individual reports.

  35. Enter a Header for your report.  In this example, enter ECO 201 03 Exam 1.

    Review Selections Screen:

  39. Verify Student Name and ID fields have a check in the ID column


    Verify points per question look as they should in the Correct Points column.


    Click Finish.

  40. Do not save the answer key for later use, unless you are using the same key for many tests.

    Run and Save Reports:

  43. The list of reports are displayed on the left.


    The most requested reports are: 101, 103, 104, 204, and 207.

    In this example, select 101 - Student Statistics Report.

  47. Choose the export format:  .PDF or .XLS


    In this example, we'll select PDF.

  49. Save to the Desktop and give the file a name.  


    The standard naming convention is:  Report # -  Course - Section - Date


    In this example, the report name is:  101-ECO-201-020513


    Enter the file name and click the Save button.

    Click the File tab.

  53. When all the reports have been run and printed, close the Grade Wizard window.

    Open webmail and create a new email note to yourself, where you will attach the report files.
