Left and Right Function


In this topic, we will look at Left and Right Function.  

 

These two functions are used to split text.


Steps:

  1. Left Function:

     

    Select the cell where the information will be entered.  

    In this example, click cell D15.

  2. Click the Formulas tab.

  3. Click Text

  4. Select LEFT

    Step 4
  5. Click in the Text field.

    Step 5
  6. Place the cell reference of the text string in the Text box. 

     

    In this example, enter e5.

  7. Click in the Num_chars field.

    Step 7
  8. Enter the number of characters you want to extract from the left.   In this example, enter 4.

  9. Click the OK button.

  11. Right Function:

     

    Select the cell where the information will be placed.   In this example, click cell D16.

  13. Click RIGHT

  14. Click in the Text field.

  15. Place the cell reference of the text string in the Text box. 

     

    In this example, enter e5.

  16. Click in the Num_chars field.

  17. Enter the number of characters you want to extract from the right.   In this example, enter 4.
