Common Chart Types


Selecting the right chart or graph will depend on the data you are trying to plot.   

 

In this topic we will look at some of the more common chart types.


Steps:

  1. Highlight the data you want to plot

  2. Click the Insert  tab

     

    Create a column chart

  3. Column Chart:  Charts used to display data arranged in columns and rows.  Column charts are useful for showing data over a period of time.

     

    Create a column chart by highlighting your data and selecting Column

  4. In this example we will use the 100% Stacked Column in 3-D

  6. Highlight your data and select Insert

  7. Line Chart:   Line charts display data that is set over a period of time, data sued to display a trend.

     

    To create a line chart select Line

  8. In this example we will use Stacked line with Markers

  10. Highlight your data and select Insert

  11. Pie Chart:  Charts used to display single data series.  

     

    To create a pie chart select Pie

  12. In this example we'll select Pie in 3-D

  15. Bar Chart:  These charts are similar to column charts but display at a horizontal angle.    Bar charts are used to compare individual items.

     

    To create a bar chart select Bar

  16. In this example we'll use 100% Stacked Bar in 3-D

  18. Highlight your data and click Insert

  19. Area Chart:  Area charts are used to emphasize the magnitude or rate of change.

     

    To create an area chart select Area

  20. In this example we'll use Stacked Area in 3-D

  23. Scatter (XY) Chart:   Chart used to show a correlation between values.

     

    To create a scatter chart select Scatter
